There is an old hymn that is near and dear to the hearts of many, “Grace Greater Than All Our Sins.” There is not a finer thought, a more humbling concept, and beautiful reality than the grace of God. Men have sought it, written about it, sermonized over it, sang its truth and found it. A concept more precious than the grace of God does not exist.
“Marvelous grace of our loving Lord, grace that exceeds our sin and our guilt. Yonder on Calvaries mount outpoured. There were the blood of the lamb was spilt. Grace, grace, God’s grace, grace that will pardon and cleanse within. Grace, grace, God’s grace, grace that is greater than all our sin.”
The matchless grace of our loving Lord oozes from the pages of holy writ. Mankind is somewhat predisposed to doing the wrong thing (Romans 7:15). That being the case, we stand in constant need of Gods glorious grace. Grace, has been termed, “unmerited favor.” It is rightly thus tabbed since there is nothing man can do to put God in debt to him (Titus 3:5; Ephesians 2:8). If a man accomplished every good deed humanly possible, he would have only done that which was his duty (Luke 17:10). The goodness of God is available because he is gracious and plenteous in mercy (Psalm 103:8).
Grace is also misunderstood. Grace doesn’t just pardon the sin; it directs the sinner. “For the grace of God which brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that denying ungodliness and worldly lust, we should live soberly, righteously and godly, in this present world” (Titus 2:11-12).
A wonderful example of this principle is found in John 8:1-11. In the first 10 verses Jesus teaching is interrupted by the scribes and Pharisees. They have arrested a woman who they caught in the act of adultery and brought her to Jesus (Jn.8:3-4). They used this woman as a pawn to get to Him. They wanted to accuse Him and have reason to dispose of Him (John 8:5-6). Jesus lowers Himself and begins to write on the ground. He completely dismissed their presence. As they kept pressing the Lord concerning this woman clearly condemned by Moses, Jesus stands to His feet, wipes the dust off His finger, and tells the men, “He that is without sin among you, let him cast the first stone at her” (John 8:7). This moment was so impactful. First, it impacted the men. They were convicted by their own conscience and left one by one (John 8:9). Second, it impacted the woman! This left Jesus and the woman standing in the midst, alone. This sinful, ashamed, guilty woman sharing space and oxygen with the spotless Son of God. This prompted Jesus next words, “Where are those thine accusers? Hath no man condemned thee?” (John 8:10). There isn’t any doubt that with the question came a soft and timid answer, “No man, Lord.” And here we see the “Marvelous grace of our loving Lord,” and hers too. Jesus said, “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” So, third, it impacts us!
Jesus chose grace. This decision was made from eternity. This was Jesus’ mission (Luke 1:79; 19:10). The grace bestowed by Jesus Christ pardoned her. He did not condemn her and that was unmerited favor! She deserved to be put to death by the law of Moses (Leviticus 20:10). Jesus gave her grace. Notice what He said, “neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.” That’s the direction! Grace’s direction for this woman was the instruction to get up, dust yourself off, and go sin no more. “A righteous man falls down seven times, and rises again” (Proverbs 24:16). Jesus is the God of second chances. Grace tells us when we fall, “Get up, go, and sin no more.”
Grace is life changing. It doesn’t just change the past; it gives direction for the future! It takes the hopeless and injects hope. It takes the fearful and instills forwardness. It took this sinner and made a saint. Grace taught her to go and do better. That is what God wants you to do with grace. He says, “denying ungodliness and worldly lust, we should live soberly, righteously and godly.” Stop the bad and start the good, and do it by the grace of God.
Grace is greater than all our sin!
